Let’s admit it… All of us have been through struggling times and have looked up at the heavens above with just one question on our mind, ‘Why me? Why are you (god) making me go through so much of struggle in life? Can’t you for once give me something easy in life? Just once?’
Am I not right?
I was going through such struggling times too. Looking for answers here and there, I came across a story that brilliantly explained the reason why we need to go through the phase of struggle to learn our lessons and succeed in life. The story was as follows:
A boy found a butterfly’s cocoon in his garden one day. Next day, he noticed that a small opening had appeared. For several hours, he watched patiently while the butterfly struggled to force itself out through the little hole. Then it stopped struggling, almost as if it could go no further.
Deciding to help the butterfly, the boy used a pair of scissors to snip the remaining bit of the cocoon and the butterfly emerged easily.
Something was rather strange though. The butterfly had a swollen body and shrivelled wings. The boy continued to wait expectantly, hoping that at any moment the butterfly’s wings would contract.
Neither event happened. I fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and deformed wings, never being able to fly.
What the boy in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the resultant struggle required for the butterfly to get out are Nature’s way of forcing fluid from the butterfly’s body into its wings, so that it is ready for flight after achieving freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in life to shape us and get the best out of us. Not all of us understand that it’s the law of nature which makes sure that we struggle to grow stronger and better in life. Anything just served on our plate without any effort of ours will never get us anywhere in life.
After reading this story, I am sure you would be left pondering over your struggling times and how you had made your way out of it. You were blessed with the wisdom that would get you through the journey of life; You had learnt an important lesson that no book could teach you.
Don’t take the struggling times as the worst phase of your life. Just bear in mind that may be you are being trained for something you need to know for your future to be a brighter one. Remember, only the right attitude can get you through your tough times.
I hope this story has changed the way you look at your struggling times, just the way it had for me. 🙂
